What an online medical certificate covers

An online medical certificate is the same document your GP would write, issued after a telehealth assessment instead of an in-person visit. It records that a registered doctor has assessed you and considers you unfit for work, study, or your normal duties for a stated period. Medio certificates carry the issuing doctor's name and AHPRA registration number, so they can be verified by an employer or university.

Most people request a certificate for a short illness: a cold, gastro, a migraine, a flare of an existing condition, or a day needed to care for a family member. The service is designed for exactly that, which is why it costs $19 rather than the price of a full consultation, and why it does not require a phone call in most cases.

What it is not designed for is a substitute for assessment when you need one. If your questionnaire suggests something that should be looked at properly, the doctor will tell you and may recommend a telehealth consultation instead. Certificates for extended leave, WorkCover, or Centrelink purposes usually fall into that category.

What your medical certificate includes

Employers and universities are checking for a small number of specific things, and every certificate Medio issues carries all of them:

  • The issuing doctor's full name and AHPRA registration number, so the certificate can be verified on the public AHPRA register.
  • The date the certificate was issued, and the specific dates you are considered unfit for work or study.
  • A statement that you were assessed by a registered medical practitioner.
  • No diagnosis. Certificates state that you are unfit for your normal duties, not what is wrong with you, which is the standard format and protects your privacy.

If your workplace or institution has a form of its own that needs completing, tell the doctor in your questionnaire so they can consider it before issuing.

Carers leave

Online medical certificate FAQs

A single online medical certificate costs $19. That is the whole fee: there is no membership, no subscription, and no separate consultation charge on top. If the doctor decides your situation needs a fuller assessment rather than a certificate, they will tell you what the appropriate next step is and what it costs before anything else happens.

Book appointment

Requests submitted during business hours are usually reviewed and emailed the same day. You do not need to wait for an appointment slot, because the doctor works from the questionnaire you complete rather than a scheduled call. If the doctor needs to clarify something before deciding, they will phone you, which can add a little time.

Book appointment

Complete a short questionnaire about your symptoms and pay the $19 fee. An AHPRA-registered doctor reviews it and, where a certificate is clinically appropriate, emails the certificate to you the same day. If the doctor needs more detail before deciding, they will call you.

Book appointment

Not in most cases. For a short, straightforward illness the doctor can assess your request from the questionnaire alone, which is what keeps the service quick and the fee low. The doctor will call you if your answers suggest they need more information, or if what you have described should be looked at more carefully than a certificate request allows.

Book appointment

Yes. Under the Fair Work Act an employer can ask for evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person, and a certificate from a registered medical practitioner meets that test regardless of whether the consultation happened in a clinic or by telehealth. Your certificate shows the issuing doctor's name, AHPRA registration number, the date of issue, and the dates you are unfit for work or study.

Book appointment

Both. Single-day certificates are the most common request and are covered by the standard $19 fee. Multi-day certificates are available where the doctor considers the length of leave clinically justified. Longer periods of leave usually need a fuller assessment, so the doctor may ask you to book a telehealth consultation instead.

Book appointment

Yes. Personal leave under the Fair Work Act covers illness or injury, and mental health conditions are included. You can describe stress, burnout, anxiety, low mood, or sleep problems in your questionnaire in the same way you would describe physical symptoms. The certificate states the dates you are unfit for work rather than your diagnosis, so you are not required to disclose the reason to your employer.

Book appointment

An employer can ask whether the evidence is genuine, but they cannot reasonably reject a certificate simply because the consultation happened by telehealth. The Fair Work Act asks for evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person, and a certificate from an AHPRA-registered doctor meets that standard. Every Medio certificate carries the doctor's name and AHPRA registration number, which your employer can verify on the public AHPRA register.

Book appointment

Yes. A carers leave certificate covers time away from work to care for an immediate family or household member. You will need to give the doctor the details of the person you are caring for and the reason care is needed. The certificate is issued in your name, because it is your leave.

Book appointment

Yes. Certificates for special consideration, missed exams, and assessment extensions are issued in the same way as workplace certificates. Some universities require the certificate to state the dates you were affected rather than a diagnosis, and that is the format we use by default.

Book appointment

A psychologist can provide a letter about your care, but most employers and universities specifically ask for a certificate from a registered medical practitioner. Pharmacists in some states can issue absence-from-work certificates with a limited scope. A certificate from an AHPRA-registered doctor is the version accepted most widely, and that is what Medio issues.

Book appointment

A doctor can only certify what they can reasonably assess. If you were unwell yesterday and are requesting the certificate today, say so in your questionnaire and the doctor will decide what is defensible to certify. A certificate covering a long period before the consultation is generally not appropriate and the doctor may decline to issue one.

Book appointment

The doctor makes the clinical call, and paying the fee does not guarantee a certificate. If the doctor cannot issue one, they will explain why and, where relevant, suggest the right next step. Our refund policy is set out in the terms, and you can contact us if you think your situation warrants review.
