If the doctor decides your situation needs a fuller assessment rather than a certificate, they will tell you what the appropriate next step is and what it costs before anything else happens.

You do not need to wait for an appointment slot, because the doctor works from the questionnaire you complete rather than a scheduled call. If the doctor needs to clarify something before deciding, they will phone you, which can add a little time.

Your certificate shows the issuing doctor's name, AHPRA registration number, the date of issue, and the dates you are unfit for work or study.

You can describe stress, burnout, anxiety, low mood, or sleep problems in your questionnaire in the same way you would describe physical symptoms. The certificate states the dates you are unfit for work rather than your diagnosis, so you are not required to disclose the reason to your employer.

An employer can ask whether the evidence is genuine, but they cannot reasonably reject a certificate simply because the consultation happened by telehealth. The Fair Work Act asks for evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person, and a certificate from an AHPRA-registered doctor meets that standard. A psychologist can provide a letter about your care, but most employers and universities specifically ask for a certificate from a registered medical practitioner. Pharmacists in some states can issue absence-from-work certificates with a limited scope. A certificate from an AHPRA-registered doctor is the version accepted most widely, and that is what Medio issues.

A doctor can only certify what they can reasonably assess. If you were unwell yesterday and are requesting the certificate today, say so in your questionnaire and the doctor will decide what is defensible to certify. A certificate covering a long period before the consultation is generally not appropriate and the doctor may decline to issue one.

The doctor makes the clinical call, and paying the fee does not guarantee a certificate. If the doctor cannot issue one, they will explain why and, where relevant, suggest the right next step.
