The scale is worth dwelling on, because it is where the claim usually loses its footing. The finding comes from a 2005 study on isolated enzyme, and the concentration needed to inhibit half the enzyme activity was in the region of half a millimole per litre. That is a lot of pinene. It is far above anything a person would reach from inhaling a flower that is a few percent terpene by weight, of which pinene is typically a small fraction.
This is nonetheless the origin of the most repeated claim about pinene: that it counteracts the short-term memory impairment associated with THC. That is a useful number for an inhaled product, because it means the question of what a terpene does is at least not blocked at the first step. Whatever pinene is doing or not doing, a reasonable share of what leaves the vaporiser is getting into you rather than being exhaled.
It is not, by itself, evidence of any effect. Absorption tells you a compound arrives; it says nothing about what it does once it does.

Smell is suggestive and nothing more. The reliable source is the certificate of analysis for the batch, which lists the terpene profile as a percentage of total weight. Your pharmacy can usually supply it, and some suppliers publish them.
Two things to expect when you look. Pinene is usually a minor component in modern chemovars, because decades of breeding selected for THC and for the aromas that sold. In laboratory surveys of which terpene leads the profile, alpha-pinene comes out on top in only a small minority of samples, well behind myrcene, the caryophyllene group and limonene. And the numbers move between batches of the same named product, because terpene content depends on growing conditions, harvest timing, drying and storage.
That batch variation is the real reason to write things down. If a product worked well for you and the next batch of the same name did not, a terpene profile is one of the few places where a concrete difference might show up.
