The two numbers that make up the real cost

Almost every comparison of cheap medical cannabis in Australia goes wrong in the same way: it compares consultation fees and stops there. There are two numbers, and the smaller one gets all the attention. The clinic side is what you pay the doctor, $99 for your initial consultation at Medio and $59 for each follow-up. The pharmacy side is what you pay to fill the script, which for most patients lands between $2 and $10 per day depending on the formulation and dose.

A $29 consultation at a clinic that dispenses in-house is not cheaper than a $99 consultation at a clinic that does not, if the dispensing margin comes back to you at the counter. The only figure worth comparing is consultation plus dispensing over a full month, which is the number this page is built to help you work out.

Medio charges for consultations only. We take no commissions from product brands, run no dispensary, and sell no medication, so there is no second margin recovering the difference later. Your doctor prescribes from the full range legally available in Australia and can factor cost into that decision if you tell them it matters.

The prices below are indicative of what independent pharmacies charge and are published for transparency rather than promotion. Pharmacies set their own prices, stock varies, and a consultation does not guarantee a prescription.

How We Keep Costs Fair

  • No product mark-ups or commissions. Our prescribing is clinically led. Doctors receive zero commissions from product brands, so your treatment is based on what works for you, not what generates margin.

  • No hidden fees or lock-ins. You pay for consultations as you need them. No subscriptions, no surprise charges.

  • Pharmacy freedom. Fill your prescription at our recommended pharmacy or any Australian pharmacy you prefer.

  • Ongoing reviews. Treatment plans are reviewed regularly to keep them safe, effective, and financially sustainable.

Frequently asked questions

There are two separate costs: the doctor and the pharmacy. At Medio the doctor side is $99 for the initial consultation and $59 for each follow-up, with no subscription and no joining fee. The pharmacy side depends on the formulation and dose your doctor prescribes, and most patients spend somewhere between $2 and $10 per day. Medio does not sell medication, so pharmacy prices are set independently and vary between pharmacies.

Book appointment

Medication costs depend on the formulation and dose. Flower (dried cannabis): approx. $10 to $12 per gram ($100 to $120 RRP per 10g jar), or $6 to $8 per gram for price-conscious options ($60 to $80 RRP per 10g jar). Vape oil cartridges: approx. $90 to $120 per 1g cartridge, or $69 to $89 for price-conscious options. Edibles: $120 to $150 for a 30-piece pack, or $100 for a price-conscious 30-piece pack and $160 to $200 for a 60-piece pack. Oral oil: $89 to $120 for a 30 mL bottle, or $59 to $79 for price-conscious options. The estimated costs above are provided for financial transparency only and are not promotional. Prescribing is strictly limited to authorised medical practitioners and is based on clinical necessity. Medio does not sell medication; prices are set by independent dispensing pharmacies and may vary.

Book appointment

For dried flower, pharmacy pricing is usually around $10 to $12 per gram, and roughly $6 to $8 per gram for price-conscious options, which is where a 10g jar lands between $60 and $120 RRP. Per-gram pricing only applies to flower. Oils, capsules and other formulations are priced per bottle or per pack instead, so the useful comparison is what a month of your specific prescription costs rather than the headline gram rate. Medio does not sell medication, so these figures are indicative of independent pharmacy pricing and will vary.

Book appointment

Not because of the state itself. There is no state-based price loading and no state tax that makes a prescription dearer in Sydney than in Perth. Prices vary between individual pharmacies, and between products, far more than they vary between states. Consultation fees at Medio are the same everywhere in Australia at $99 initial and $59 follow-up. If you have seen a much higher figure quoted for your state, it is usually a clinic that dispenses in-house or bundles a subscription rather than a genuine regional difference.

Book appointment

The usual reason is where the clinic makes its money. A clinic that dispenses in-house, takes commissions from product brands, or bundles you into a subscription can advertise a low consultation fee and recover it elsewhere. Medio charges for consultations only, takes no product commissions, and does not dispense, so what you see on the pricing section is what the clinic earns.

Book appointment

Generally no. Most medicinal cannabis products are not PBS-listed, and Medio consultations are private, so there is no Medicare rebate on the appointment fee. That is why comparing the total of consultation plus dispensing is more useful than comparing advertised consultation fees alone.

Book appointment

No. You pay for consultations as you need them, at $99 for the initial and $59 for follow-ups. There is no membership, no repeat-script surcharge from the clinic, and no lock-in contract. Pharmacy dispensing is a separate cost paid to the pharmacy.

Book appointment

Tell your doctor that cost matters, because they can only account for it if they know. Price-conscious products exist across every formulation, and part of a follow-up review is checking that the plan is still working and still affordable. Product selection and dosing remain clinical decisions made by your doctor.

Book appointment

Yes. Your eScript is not tied to a nominated pharmacy, so you can compare prices and stock before you fill it. If a pharmacy is not set up for medicinal cannabis dispensing, we can forward the script to one of our recommended pharmacies for same-day or next-day processing.

Book appointment

You pay the consultation fee, because you are paying for the doctor's time and assessment rather than for a prescription. A consultation does not guarantee a prescription, and the doctor will say so during the appointment if medicinal cannabis is not the right option, along with what they would suggest instead.
