Who can be prescribed medical cannabis in Australia
There is no official list of approved conditions. Medical cannabis is an unapproved therapeutic good, which means a doctor can apply to prescribe it for any condition where they judge it clinically appropriate, rather than choosing from a fixed set. In practice most patients meet three criteria: they are over 18, they have a condition that has lasted three months or more, and they have already tried at least one conventional treatment that did not work well enough or caused side effects they could not live with.
The conditions doctors see most often are chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and nausea, but the reason for treatment matters far less than the history behind it. A short account of what you have already tried is the single most useful thing you can bring to a consultation.
What happens after the quiz
The result tells you whether an appointment is likely to be worthwhile. It is not an approval, and a positive result does not commit you to anything. If you book, you speak with an AHPRA-registered Australian doctor by phone, usually within a few days. They will go through your medical history, current medications, and what you have already tried, then decide whether treatment is appropriate.
Some patients are not suitable, and the doctor will say so. A history of psychosis, current pregnancy or breastfeeding, and certain heart conditions all weigh against treatment, and some medications interact badly. Being told no is a legitimate outcome of a consultation, which is why a clinic that guarantees a prescription in advance is not a clinic worth using.
Things worth knowing first
- You do not need a referral from your GP, and you do not need their permission. We do write to your GP if you would like us to.
- Driving with THC in your system is an offence in every Australian state, regardless of whether it was prescribed and regardless of whether you feel impaired. This catches people out and is worth settling before you start.
- Medication is dispensed by an independent pharmacy and paid for there, not to Medio. Consultation fees and medication costs are separate, and we take no commission on what is prescribed.
- If the quiz suggests you are not a good candidate, that is worth taking seriously, but it is a screening tool rather than a medical opinion. Your own GP remains the right place to take a condition that is not being managed well.
